When we started Boyden’s interim management practice in the United States in 2004, our goal was to apply the same principles to Interim that we have used in our Retained Search practice for more than 60 years: a thorough process that includes meticulous research, finding the best candidates, extensive interviews, and outstanding customer service. After a decade of downsizing, restructuring, and significant merger/acquisition activity removed a heavy layer of middle and upper management, we felt a market for interim leadership would surely evolve. We expected the newly created talent gap would bring on the need for Interim Managers who could solve complex problems, assist with transitions, fill short-term gaps, and manage critical projects and initiatives. And – we were right!
The economic roller coaster ride over the past several years has told us three things about Interim Management. The first is that it thrives in good times and bad. The second is that the pool of Interim Managers will continue to grow as baby boomers retire in ever increasing numbers.
